An interesting report on how you get demoted by the Bush administration if you refuse to mislead the public. Lawrence A. Greenfeld is being demoted from the Justice Department Bureau of Justice Statistics for not deleting data on aggressive police treatment of black and Hispanic drivers (racial profiling is supposed to be acceptable in fighting a war on terrorism). Meanwhile, Greenfeld’s supervisor Tracy Henke has been nominated for a senior post in the Department of Homeland Security, proof that manipulating the numbers for the benefit of the Bush administration pays off. Or did Condoleezza already prove that?

Speaking of unequal treatment, what would happen if you were an Islamic cleric and you advocated the assassination of a foreign leader, say, Tony Blair, for his role in the Iraq war? Well, what would happen would be remarkably different from what happens to a white Christian man, for example, Pat Robertson, calling for the assassination of a brown man, for example, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Oh, but wait, that’s right, the religious right doesn’t have a radical fringe population that can be incited to commit acts of violence.

This is 73-year-old veteran, Bill Moyer, attending President Bush’s address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars earlier this week. One thing I don’t understand: Bush does a lousy job when he’s on vacation, but does an even lousier job when he’s actually working. Wouldn’t it just be better if he stayed on vacation until 2008? In his Idaho speech on Wednesday, Bush stated, “So long as I'm the President, we will stay, we will fight, and we will win the war on terror.” Making certain assumptions, I guess that’s one way of saying we will be occupying Iraq at least through January 2009.
